Big Red is going
green! Driving green! Last year, Garbage Hound Sanitation became the first local garbage collection company to use biodiesel exclusively in our fleet. We are currently using B99 (0% Diesel, 99.9% biofuel) to fuel our fleet. As the temperatures drop, we will be forced to move to B85 (15% Petroleum Diesel, 85% biofuel) in order to keep the biofuel in a liquid state. As a part of our efforts to inform the community, our trucks have a placard indicating that we run on Biodiesel . The current blend of biodiesel we're using is manufactured locally in Loganville and made from 100% poultry fat. For more information on biodiesel, visit BioDiesel.org. Additional ways we strive for green in our fleet is by purchasing remanufactured parts and by having our old parts rebuilt. We have our brake shoes relined locally. Our fleet runs on recapped tires wherever possible. This keeps waste down and is the most direct way of recycling parts. Printing green! Our printer looks ordinary, but its ink is quite a sight. The "ink" consists of large, solid pieces of colored wax which the printer melts to print with. It produces 90% less waste than a conventional printer as it has no cartridge. In our conventional copier, we use recycled cartridges to cut waste. The envelopes, office paper and other paper products in the office are recycled in our efforts to go green. Recycling green! Last year we began our recycling program on a limited basis and it has become quite a route. Although we're currently only servicing certain areas, we've diverted over 270 tons of would-be trash to be recycled in the past year. Going green! Keep an eye on Garbage Hound Sanitation as we think of more ways to go green and make our world as clean as we can. |
